Thoughts on McGuire

150-davidnail-headshot.jpgI'm just a 30 year old singer who loves baseball.  I know more random facts than most, and have received much hazing for the uselessness of the majority of that knowledge.  I played with one current major leaguer, and coached three current minor leaguers.  I'm no expert, but I'm in the vicinity!  HA!

I'll do one about the world series tomorrow!

Warning :  Reading this blog may cause immediate rage.
I'm done with steroids!  I could care less about steroids!  I believe steroids are the single most overrated topic in all of sports today!  If you've done steroids before, hopefully you stopped well before you had any health issues.  If you're a kid and doing steroids, I'm here to tell to it isn't going to suddenly make you big league material.  The biggest misconception in sports today is that baseball players did steroids to hit homeruns, and to throw 100 mph.  I could have used steroids from the age of 16, and it may have enhanced my ability enough to get drafted, and I mean late in round 55, but I would never have made it to the big leagues, and not even close!  You may ask where this is coming from, well prepare for my sermon!

Mark McGuire doesn't owe anyone a damn thing.  Why must he admit anything?  What will it prove?  Will it do anything more than allow sports writers to say, "I told you he did them"?  Everyone keeps saying it'll let the press and public forgive him!  Forgive him for what?  What if he doesn't need our forgiveness?  What if he's perfectly content living his life, and content on how he lived his life pre-retirement? Hypothetically, if someone assumes because I'm a singer, I do illegal drugs, should I come out and defend myself just so everyone feels better? (I've never done drugs, but it's a legitamate stereotype)  The answer is no!  I'm a grown man.  Mark McGuire is a grown man.  And though we may both be role models, it's up to each individual to decide how seriously he takes that role, not the media!

If Harold Baines is announced tomorrow as the new hitting coach in Oakland, will the local media be asking when he'll make himself available to the media?  The answer is no!

So why must McGuire rehash mistakes he "may" have made 10 years ago, so that we the media can nail him to a cross and feel as if he's paid for his crimes?

I don't know Mark McGuire, however I do know that I'm a fairly good judge of character, and so I say without a doubt that I believe he's an amazing role model for the youth of today!  I don't need him to stand up and admit any of his mistakes about steroids or anything else for that matter!  How about stand there and talk about being respectful to others, how to be a father and a husband, how about riding off into the sunset and being satisfied with your success!  We all want to kill the guy for going to Congress and saying "I'm not here to talk about the past"!  Well at least he showed up!

When someone can explain what good an admission will do, I will apologize for my strong comments, but until then, let the guy coach hitting, and let the guy be a mentor to young hitters everywhere.  I would venture to say he's never suggested someone try steroids.  He's coming back to coach hitting!

May the headlines be about the Cardinal hitters next year, and nothing more!  As the biggest Cardinal fan in the world, that's all I truly care about!

P.S.  I don't condone the use of steroids in anyway.  If you're out there doing steroids, please stop!
